Rings around the hooves can often appear after a bout of laminitis (sometimes referred to as founder). Certainly, lameness in the front feet attributable to founder is generally severe, with an unwillingness to bear weight and a rocked-back stance observed in most cases. Digital pulses can often be felt in the feet or heel region of a laminitic horse, as well.
If you suspect your horse might have laminitis, please consult a vet as soon as possible. Some horses afflicted with laminitis return to full use, but correct diagnosis and treatment is essential and is time sensitive. Please see www.extension.org/pages/Equine_Laminitis_or_Founder for additional information.
