Horse Gestation

A horse at the barn I am at right now is scared of gates and will not let the little girl there get on him. He is 11 years old and was an amazing pony the first month at another barn. What do you think caused this?

There could be many reasons why this horse is reacting in the manner described. Since we are unable to observe the animal's behavior, it would also be difficult to describe what handling techniques you can try to solve the problem.
