You have to try and be present at the birth of your foal to assist with any complications and increase its chance for survival. If possible, your vet should also attend the foal’s birth.

Here are helpful suggestions if your veterinarian is not present:

  1. Make sure the birthing area is clean to minimize the risk of infection.
  2. To help him breath naturally, immediately remove any mucus which may be covering the foal’s nose and mouth after birth.
  3. Rub the foal with a clean towel. This will dry the foal and help stimulate breathing.
  4. It is important to allow the mare to muzzle and bond with the foal.
  5. Do not cut off the umbilical cord, but allow it to break naturally. If necessary, you may use umbilical clips or ties that are available from your veterinarian. These should be placed a few inches from the abdomen.
  6. Disinfect the navel with a 7% iodine solution several times over the next three days. In addition, your vet may also advise using a sterile gauze pad to compress and protect the navel after applying the iodine solution.
  7. Consult your veterinarian regarding any antibiotic use and medical treatment for your foal at birth and when signs of disease are present.
  8. Maintain close observation of the foal to ensure its good health and to alert you to signs of stress or disease.
