According to an article in The Billings Gazette the BLM is proposing another Red Desert excess wild horse roundup. While only in the planning stages, public comment is invited until January 21, 2011.

The next step will be the preparation of an environmental assessment. In order to keep the number of wild horses at what they deem to be manageable levels, the BLM is planning to remove about 600 horses, that will be kept in long-term containment or put up for adoption. Also proposed is a fertility control vaccine.

Last summer, the BLM conducted a round up of over 2000 horses that incited much controversy and outrage from horse lovers across North America. According to the BLM, there are about 38,000 wild horses on public lands.
