Horses cannot get lungworms from goats. Donkeys are normal hosts for lungworms (rarely do donkeys have clinical problems with lungworms), so maturation takes place in their lungs, and larvae are shed in their feces. Donkeys are the source for infections in horses. Donkeys can also be the source of lungworms for goats. Donkeys periodically given Ivermectin cease being carriers of lungworms for horses. Infection is usually light in older horses because they develop resistance to the parasite and usually have no signs. If foals are infected, they could die from a lungworm infection because they have less immunity. That's why it's a good idea to separate older horses from young foals and to maintain a regular deworming program. Does your horse graze in the same field as the goats? Do you know what dewormer is used on the goats? It is recommended to treat goats with Ivomec 1% cattle injectable given orally before new pasture season arrives and again in early fall. Your veterinarian is the best source for specific answers.
