Typically, the foal will be about 10% of the mare's weight. Use a weight tape from the local feed store to estimate the mare's weight. If the mare is 1,500 lb, the foal should be about 150 lb at birth regardless of sex. After the foal starts maturing and adding muscle mass, the weight will begin to vary based on sex.
