A few summers ago, after a particularly hot and humid day, my daughter made the mistake of putting her riding helmet into it's case and tucking the case into her tack box, where it was forgotten for a few (hot) days. When she went to use it again, it smelled rather fermented and funky (to understate things slightly). No one would have wanted it on their head, that's certain. It took a bit of time and experimenting, but we did finally eradicate the odor, making the helmet wearable again.

Most schooling helmets don't require a lot of care. Velvet and velveteen covered helmets and those with satiny liners like show helmets may take a little more TLC to keep them smelling fresh and looking sharp. Caring for your riding helmet will keep it dust and odor free, and make it much nicer to wear.
