Over at Holistic Horse, I came across this interesting tip to salvage the good hay out of round bales that have become wet: Chain Saw Bad Hay to Save Usable Feed. I know I threw out round bales I suspected of having mold in them and there were about a half dozen of them turning to compost when we sold our hobby farm. I never thought of slicing off the good part, simply because we didn't think it could be done and since didn't own a chainsaw, probably wouldn't have wanted to try it with borrowed equipment. I don't know if I'd trust myself to use a chainsaw safely! I think the one caveat for this tip is to make sure there is no mold in the hay you've salvaged. Sometimes in a tightly packed round bale mold might not be obvious. I would unroll the salvaged parts and stick my nose into the hay, just to be sure.
