Last week I headed out to do a little holiday shopping and stopped off at our local tack store.

Because our horses must wear a halter at all times, I decided that I wasn't comfortable with Trillium wearing one that didn't have a breakaway crown. I liked the color of the one she had, because the vivid orange was easy to find in the mud when she lost it. And because it was a very cheap halter, I was pretty sure the metal fittings would break if she did get hung up by the halter. Nevertheless, I decided an inexpensive breakaway halter is a small price to pay for the extra piece of mind. The old orange one can hang around on stand-by if her new one breaks.

If you've brought a new horse home, it may be time to buy a new halter. Your horse should have come with a halter on, but that doesn't mean it's the right size, isn't damaged somehow or that you even like it. Choosing a Horse Halter has suggestions for picking out the right halter for your horse, and How to Fit a Horse Halter will help you find a good fit.
