It just occurred to me that today is March 1, and that reminded of an old adage my father passed on about livestock feed, firewood and food stores for humans in the 'olden days'.

On March first he'd explain, there was still a long stretch until spring when animals could graze on pasture and humans could harvest fruits and vegetables. On March first, you should still have half of your hay in the barn. That way you would have enough to carry you through until the pasture was really ready for your livestock (and you could finally eat something fresh-picked).

Do you have enough hay to get you through to green grass? If not, here's how to choose hay for your horse, even if it is coming out of someone else's barn.
