Yesterday as I was was grooming before I rode Trillium, I noticed her coat was getting a bit thicker and longer. As the days shorten and become cooler, the horses start to put on their winter coats.

It's tempting to blanket horses to lessen the amount of coat growth and keep your horse looking sleek all winter. But does this work, and is it a good idea? I prefer not to blanket at all. I live in a very cold part of the world, where winter starts with slushy freezing rain and continues with howling winds, driving snow and icy winds. So I do resort to a blanket when the weather is really miserable. Blanketing probably won't stop the hair coat from growing, even if started early in the fall and here is why. Do you blanket your horse during the winter months? Take the poll and leave your comments below.
