The New Zealand ezine, Horsetalk.co.nz, reports that the campaign to support horseback riding helmet use is gaining ground. June 8 to 15 is Head Injury Awareness Week in that part of the world and June is Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada. I think it is very important to be a role model for younger riders and beginners. And having experienced two concussions myself, one from a fall from a horse, the other when my car was hit by a drunk driver, I know first hand that head injuries are something you want to avoid. While helmets won't protect you from every riding injury, they do protect the one part that is very hard to fix--your brain. If you're not convinced that helmets are important, watch the video 'Wipeout'. Although this video doesn't mention horseback riders, I think it should give rides food for thought. Please, where and whenever you are on your horse (or whatever your ride), be a role model and wear a helmet.
