How could the creator of this saying not know that 'foal' was the proper term they should have used. (Smug little critter wasn't I?) But the confusion is common and colt is quite often misused when talking about a baby horse. Here are the definitions of colt, filly and foal, so you'll know which word to use to specify which type of horse baby you're talking about (or just in case my 40 years younger alter ego is wandering around).
