- I am in the very early stages of starting a blacksmith, farrier, and tool-service practice. I think I have most of the necessary paperwork completed to get started (accounting forms, farrier evaluation worksheets, accounts payable and receivable, schedule of liabilities, etc.), but I am still in need of some guidance so I do not "veer off track" during this time. Has anyone been in this position before who could lend a hand?
- I am looking for a professional to help me do interpretations on my hay analysis for sugar and starch. I have an insulin-resistant mare and have just had my hay tested. What do the abbreviations mean and which ones are important?
- I am trying to assist a 4-H'er in preparing a leg wrap presentation. We are looking for references to distinguish the difference between brace bandages, standing wraps, polos, etc. We know the answers but need documentation and further research resources.
- I am trying to build weight and muscle on my horse. He is being fed calf manna as a supplement to a pelleted feed, as well as a Triple Crown 30 percent protein supplement. He gets timothy hay and is turned out six-plus hours per day. Is it possible that a
- I am wondering about the treatment of a shoulder injury to my 12 h pony. My veterinarian says she damaged the suprascapular nerve when she collided with a tree. Should I confine her, as the shoulder keeps popping out? Is there hope of her walking properly again?
- I brought home two horses (both previously companions of each other) from a boarding and training facility. Since being moved to our property, the horse I have had the most experience working with (lunging, riding, ground manners) is bonding the least to both my husband and me. He accepts very little touching and prefers to shy away. If I try to catch him, he initiates an escape plan. The horse I have had the least amount of experience with is very personable and willing (follows you everywhere, allows himself to be groomed, lunged, etc.). Also, when I took the second horse out of the paddock for lunging, the first horse threw a fit and ran around, bucking and complaining. The second horse was never out of sight of the first horse. The person selling the horses thought keeping these two horses together would be a good idea, but I am having second thoughts. Any suggestions?
- I currently plow rein my four-year-old mare. I want to get her to neck rein. What is the best way to do that?
- I had a mare returned to me in what I would call very poor condition. How can I determine what body condition score to give this mare?
- I have a 10 year old Dutch Warmblood, imported from Holland just over two years ago. Each time he has an injection (either IV or IM) he is having skin reactions such as heat and swelling and they are getting progressively worse. He still has a knot over his jugular from a banamine injection from Oct. Who can I contact for more information on how to prevent/ treat this before he gets seriously worse? My veterinarian has already tried many of the normal treatments/ preventions.
- I have a 19-month-old filly that is Clydesdale x Appaloosa. She has held her weight very well all through winter. She mainly lives out but has been in for a couple of weeks when very cold. In the space of one week, she has dropped quite a large amount of
- I have a 1½-year-old Shetland pony and recently got a 3-year-old female miniature donkey. The pony has been gelded. I am having problems with the pony chasing and biting at the donkey whenever someone goes near her. He also doesn't share well when it comes to eating hay. Is this something that they will work out over time? They have been together for about three weeks.
- I have a 21-acre hay field that I harvest for horse feed. The field was originally seeded as alfalfa which is mostly gone at this point. Each year there seems to be more clover and weeds such as wild carrot and wild strawberry. Last year I had 7 acres plowed up and reseeded with a pasture mix. It seems to have been quite successful, but it also cost about $1,900 which will take a long time to recoup. I have been reading about the disadvantages of opening the soil and am wondering if it would be advisable to spray the weeds and add alfalfa and assorted grasses with a no-till method?
- I have a 22 year old Morgan mare who is an easy keeper and insulin resistant. The owners of the barn where I board her are planning on plowing their alfalfa field under and replanting a grass hay. Which type of hay would be lowest in sugar and starch?
- I have a 25-year-old Paint Fox Trotter mare. She is losing her mane. It looks like she is going bald, but it is not breaking off. We are trying to put weight on her with beet pulp and weight gainer. She also gets MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), vitamins, and garlic granules. I'm not quite sure why she is losing the hair.
- I have a 31 year old mare, how can I stop her from cribbing in her stall and biting me whenever I tighten her girth to ride?
- I have a 4 year old mare who does not come into heat, and hasn't for 2 years. Why is this?
- I have a 5-year-old Quarter Horse that is really scared of things around our farm. I finally found out that before we bought him, he had been in an indoor arena all his life. How can I help him to gain confidence and prevent him from spooking at all the tractors and machinery around our place?
- I have a 6-year-old Tennessee walking horse that became overweight. I had to put him on Carb-X, curtail his eating, exercise him more, and use a grazing muzzle. He has lost weight, but now I am wondering if I can quit using the grazing muzzle since winter is here and the grasses probably don't have as much nutritional value as they did in warmer months.
- I have a five-year-old foundation-bred Quarter Horse who has just been diagnosed with navicular disease. My farrier has trimmed his hooves short and put on balance shoes so he will break over faster. What else can I do?
- I have a foal that at birth had good immunoglobulins IgG 12.4 g/l and now after about three weeks has an elevated temperature and swollen joint.
- I have a horse and a pony that have been chewing the bark from trees. I have cut or blocked off their access to these trees. They are showing no signs of loss of energy and they both are eating and drinking properly. Is this a vitamin in their systems that they both are lacking?? They have plenty of hay, grain, and mineral salt. Is this a lacking of fiber in their diet?? What is a source of more fiber that I can feed them that will help?? They just started chewing this winter. My horse has been in this pasture for one year before and never chewed bark before. We just purchased the pony this fall and it is the first winter for her in this pasture.
- I have a horse that backs up when she doesn't want to go forward while riding. How should I try to make her go forward?
- I have a large pony that is constantly jumping the electric fence. We have too much pasture to replace the fence line. Any suggestions on how to keep him in the pasture?
- I have a mare that has had laminitis due to getting into and eating an excessive amount of grain. We feed her two flakes of alfalfa/grass hay every morning and evening, and she was dewormed about a month ago. She is ribby and is sunk in somewhat in front of her flank area and looks as if she could put on a little weight. Can I feed her some type of grain to put on some weight since she is prone to laminitis?
- I have a mare that is pregnant, and she is losing her hair on her back hips all the way to the skin. She is 5 years old and has had a baby before but not since I have had her. The hair seems to be coming off in clumps, and I can't figure out why. She seems extremely healthy otherwise.
- I have a mare who has been very loving, but when the weather changed from very warm to cold, her mood seems to have changed. She doesn't want to be touched and gets very jumpy and nervous. Could it be the weather? Nothing else has changed.
- I have a mare who is due to foal in 10 days and is not bagging up. This is her first foal. What shall I do for her?
- I have a mare with moon blindness. She was tested for leptospirosis, and her titer level was consistent with exposure but not active infection. Is it possible that this mare can spread leptospirosis to my other horses, via secretion in her urine or feces? Can she give it to a stallion if they breed?
