- I have a foal that at birth had good immunoglobulins IgG 12.4 g/l and now after about three weeks has an elevated temperature and swollen joint.
- I have a four-horse hot walker and plan to build a round pen around it. How much room should I leave from the end of the arms before I begin the round pen fence?
- I have a horse and a pony that have been chewing the bark from trees. I have cut or blocked off their access to these trees. They are showing no signs of loss of energy and they both are eating and drinking properly. Is this a vitamin in their systems that they both are lacking?? They have plenty of hay, grain, and mineral salt. Is this a lacking of fiber in their diet?? What is a source of more fiber that I can feed them that will help?? They just started chewing this winter. My horse has been in this pasture for one year before and never chewed bark before. We just purchased the pony this fall and it is the first winter for her in this pasture.
- I have a horse that backs up when she doesn't want to go forward while riding. How should I try to make her go forward?
- I have a horse that eats bark off trees. Is this bad for him?
- I have a horse that I feed a clean grain mix — oats, barley, and roasted soybeans. My question is concerning the soy. Is this a good fat source? Is the soybean meal just as good? If not, what would be a better source of fat?
- I have a horse that is somewhat overweight. I have been feeding her hay, a small amount of 10% sweet feed and free pasture grazing. My hay provider will not have more hay for about a month. I do not want to change her diet suddenly. Can I use hay cubes/pellets, or something by the bag, to substitute for the hay nutrients and roughage?
- I have a horse who will be three years old in March 2010. He is a Mustang Appaloosa, and his current weight is about 680 lb, 14 hands 1 inch. He isn't getting much exercise. I am feeding him about 3 lb of grain, and he has very little grass to eat in the pasture. How much hay should I be giving him each day, and what would be the proper ratio of grain to hay?
- I have a large pony that is constantly jumping the electric fence. We have too much pasture to replace the fence line. Any suggestions on how to keep him in the pasture?
- I have a mare that has had laminitis due to getting into and eating an excessive amount of grain. We feed her two flakes of alfalfa/grass hay every morning and evening, and she was dewormed about a month ago. She is ribby and is sunk in somewhat in front of her flank area and looks as if she could put on a little weight. Can I feed her some type of grain to put on some weight since she is prone to laminitis?
- I have a mare that is pregnant, and she is losing her hair on her back hips all the way to the skin. She is 5 years old and has had a baby before but not since I have had her. The hair seems to be coming off in clumps, and I can't figure out why. She seems extremely healthy otherwise.
- I have a mare who has been very loving, but when the weather changed from very warm to cold, her mood seems to have changed. She doesn't want to be touched and gets very jumpy and nervous. Could it be the weather? Nothing else has changed.
- I have a mare who is due to foal in 10 days and is not bagging up. This is her first foal. What shall I do for her?
- I have a mare with moon blindness. She was tested for leptospirosis, and her titer level was consistent with exposure but not active infection. Is it possible that this mare can spread leptospirosis to my other horses, via secretion in her urine or feces? Can she give it to a stallion if they breed?
- I have a neighbor who put up a speaker next to my horse barn. It was attached to a rodent repeller at 105 decimals and an amplifer which made it louder, and he blasted it at my horses. Is there any research which would pertain to what level of sound would cause horses agitation, aggravation, and stress?
- I have a nine-month-old colt. When I castrated him, he became nervous about us picking up his back feet. It has now been three months, and he has gotten worse and worse. He will let me pick his foot up with a rope and run my hand up and down his leg. But when I go to pick it up, he kicks. If I punish him, he gets worse, I am not sure what to do.
- I have a Quarter Horse mare, 8 yrs old, and I just noticed a little crack in the center of her front hooves about 1/2" long, so I started to put Neatsfoot oil on the hooves. Will this help? If not, what will?
- I have a racing horse. A week ago, he started to cough, and he brought a little blood out of his mouth yesterday. I wonder what caused that so suddenly? In addition, please advise which medicine I should use to stop this coughing and bleeding.
- I have a seven-year-old Tennessee Walker that recently developed a lump under her jaw by her neck. It is two inches in diameter and soft to the touch. She has all her vaccinations and wormings. She has been very healthy, active and eats well. She does not show signs of stiffness or soreness.
- I have a Shetland pony that has a matted eye with some swelling. Is there a standard treatment you would recommend for these symptoms?
- I have a six-year-old mare. We have had her for about four years and have fed her roughly the same for those four years (8 quarts of sweet feed a day), daily wormer, tube worm twice a year. In winter months, she gets alfalfa hay, sometimes alfalfa cubes in transition during spring or alfalfa pellets. She has looked the same all through winter which was hard on everyone, and this week she has a marked weight loss. I have added another 8 quarts of sweet feed which is 10% with another scoop of alfalfa cubes every morning, paste wormed again. She still is not showing signs of improvement. What am I doing wrong in feeding her? There is also no feed loss, as when teeth need floating.
- I have a small horse-breeding farm and need help disposing of manure. I do not have equipment such as a tractor, spreader, etc. What are some affordable options?
- I have a spotted horse that has white around her genital area that has been raw and scabbed for a long time. Could this be skin cancer or a skin disorder?
- I have a Thoroughbred mare. Her hooves are wider than longer. The farrier says that it is because she is a Thoroughbred. Is this true?
- I have a three-year-old gelding that has never been taught any ground manners. I am working on him not following me in my space. How can I get him to turn away when I turn into him? Any ideas on how to gain his respect?
- I have a TWH that had EPM, and I treated him 10 years ago. I still ride him, and he seems to be doing all right, but when he increases his speed, he seems uncoordinated and sometimes trips. Is this a result of EPM, and can I push him to go faster to increase his coordination?
- I have about 2 acres of johnsongrass in my hay meadow that is mostly bermudagrass. Would I be safe to bale the hay and feed it to horses?
- I have about five horses that are turned out in a three-acre pasture together. It is mostly dirt right now, as the grass is not growing well. For the past year, I have supplied them with approximately one round bale per week of coastal hay. I have the opportunity to purchase orchard grass round bales now. I've never fed this type of hay, and I am interested but concerned about the risk of introducing something new to their diet. Is this a gradual change, or can I just put out a different type of round bale since there are so many horses on it?
- I have always been under the impression johnsongrass was not suitable to feed to horses. Some of my equine friends don't agree. What are the facts?
- I have an acre and a half that I would like to seed for pasture of one to two horses in Norfolk, Massachusetts. What is the best type of grass to use? I've been told orchardgrass.
- I have an orphan foal that is 10 days old. I have been bottle feeding her and she is doing great. She has become very constipated. Is there anything I can give her besides an enema?
- I have full quarter bars on my saddle and my horse is now sore from it pinching his withers. What kind of saddle should I look for?
- I have had a couple of horses with striped hooves: one regular quarter horse and one gaited. We know that this is a characteristic of Appaloosas, but neither of these have any such background. I have heard this is a passed gene trait from generations past to the present day from mustangs. What do the striped hooves indicate, and what does their presence imply?
- I have heard that feeding corn to horses isn't good for them. Where is the safe limit when feeding corn? The horses that are being fed are draft horses who do work but not overly hard.
- I have just a few horses. Can they pose an environmental problem?
- I have moved onto land that has horses and cows in the fenced pastures around my land. I plan to put in flower beds. What plants should I avoid planting?
- I have new pasture ready to plant and will have a soil test next week. What is the best grass to plant for horses for grazing in the Midlands of South Carolina? We have clay soil.
- I have several mares that will be bred live cover and have foaling dates. How long and when does foal heat occur? When will she have her next normal heat cycle?
- I have some horses with swelling in their mouth, and I was wondering what can cause this.
- I have two horses in my pasture; one is a mini, and the other is an adult. My question is what to do with the manure? Thank you
- I have two horses. Everything is fine until I try to bring them in from their paddock. One has to stay in the paddock until I bring in the other. Then I come back for the second. However, when they realize it is time to go in, problems begin. I will have one on a lead line and open the gate; the other will come up and try to push through. Neither one wants to be the one that has to wait. Do you have any suggestions on how I can teach them to be calm and wait?
- I heard of ants for control of flies. Can you send me any info? I have a small farm, and the flies drive my horses crazy.
- I just completed the construction of a new barn. The stall walls are 2 x 6 pine. What can I use as a sealer/protectant on the stall walls that will be effective yet safe for the horse if he nibbles?
- I just looked at a horse to purchase and noticed that when the horse was at a trot, the back feet crossed. This did not happen at the walk or canter. What could this problem be? The horse is an ex race horse.
- I just purchased a four-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse that has about 20 small warts on his nose and mouth. What should I do to get rid of them?
- I just purchased a Missouri Fox Trotter. I noticed a horizontal crack in her hoof the other day with a piece chipped upward in the middle. She is not lame or sensitive to this, except if you push on the affected area. Today, I noticed another one on the other rear hoof not as big, but still a horizontal crack. The crack on the left rear (the original one) is now going vertical up toward the coronet band. Did she kick herself? Or have the rainy conditions outside softened them too much. Is this hereditary, and what do I need to do to prevent it?
- I live in northern Florida. I have had my mare a year and a half approximately. In December 2008, she started behaving badly, culminating in an accident where she reared, and I fell off. This year a trainer has been highly involved. The mare has been doing quite well, although she is a very dominant alpha mare. However, starting in December 2009, she started being difficult again. This week she was aggressive when the trainer went to get her from the paddock. When she went to ride her, the mare refused to go forward (same thing as last year). She then reared up. The timing is identical to last year. Is it possible that December/January is a transitional period here in Florida and that this behavior is due to her getting ready to go into heat? My trainer thinks she should be donated and can't be sold. I purchased her last year for $18,000. I want to reveal her background but try to sell her. I want to see if I can find the cause of this behavior.
- I need an expert opinion about hauling a horse 1 1/2 hours in a stock trailer when the temperature is forecast to be about 38 to 49 degrees F. My wife has found a horse she wants that is located about 90 miles away from where we live. The seller said that he would deliver the horse in a stock trailer. Will the horse will get too cold during the trip?
- I need specific information on managing a small bluegrass pasture (formerly part of the lawn). I read that lawn chemicals have not been studied for use on such a pasture intended for grazing by horses but that farm chemicals for weed and fertilizer should be used. I need to know what to use, when it should be applied, and where to purchase it. This small pasture is approximately three-quarters of an acre.
