- I am about to open a hunter barn. I have been looking at the different pelleted feeds and have noticed the difference in protein, fat, and fiber content. What is the ideal fat, protein, and fiber combination for horses are that are in light to moderate work?
- I am buying acreage to make pastures for my horses. The land has been logged and left with logging debris and stumps that I need to have cleared. I'm wondering if you could tell me the best method for removal of stumps and also how to plant the pasture.
- I am evaluating the diet of my seven-month-old Fres xTB/WB gelding and his 17-month-old gelding brother. Both receive free choice hay grass/orch/alfalfa 24/7 turnout. They were on Progressive ration balance +/- fat supplement and are now eating Strategy (choice of my boarding facility). Is this an appropriate diet or too high in starches and sugar like molasses? Is Strategy's protein good quality? Are soybeans in Progressive ration balanced better? Do horses fed hay 24/7 really need these additional sources of proteins and nutrients, or are they better off with just a fat supplement for cool calories? They do have grass pasture for grazing in the summer, but none now. Should their diets change in the summer?
- I am in the very early stages of starting a blacksmith, farrier, and tool-service practice. I think I have most of the necessary paperwork completed to get started (accounting forms, farrier evaluation worksheets, accounts payable and receivable, schedule of liabilities, etc.), but I am still in need of some guidance so I do not "veer off track" during this time. Has anyone been in this position before who could lend a hand?
- I am interested in scientific information on natural fly deterrent methods for horses such as essential oils (mint, eucalyptus), red cedar oil, etc. that could be potentially added to their bedding, or other IPM approaches.
- I am looking at a four-year-old off-track Thoroughbred for use as an eventer. He is currently higher in the back end. Will his withers catch up? At what age do Thoroughbreds stop growing?
- I am looking for a professional to help me do interpretations on my hay analysis for sugar and starch. I have an insulin-resistant mare and have just had my hay tested. What do the abbreviations mean and which ones are important?
- I am looking for a publication to help my daughter read the body language of her ponies.
- I am looking for information on the horny hoof capsule, including diagrams.
- I am looking to renovate my horse pastures, and my soil is mostly a clay loam with areas of sand. Right now my pastures have all died due to the lack of moisture. I would like a suggestion on what to plant that will not completely die off with intensive grazing and/or drought. Is there anything that I can plant now that will provide forage for my horses late into fall?
- I am trying to assist a 4-H'er in preparing a leg wrap presentation. We are looking for references to distinguish the difference between brace bandages, standing wraps, polos, etc. We know the answers but need documentation and further research resources.

- I am trying to build weight and muscle on my horse. He is being fed calf manna as a supplement to a pelleted feed, as well as a Triple Crown 30 percent protein supplement. He gets timothy hay and is turned out six-plus hours per day. Is it possible that a horse's diet high in protein can cause a behavioral change in the horse, such as hypersensitivity to sounds, higher energy level than usual, and unusual visual fears?
- I am trying to find plans for a 12-foot by 30-foot (approximately) run-in shed with an 8-foot lean-to for my three horses. Do you know of any plans online or where I could find some that would satisfy my local building/zoning codes?
- I am wondering about the treatment of a shoulder injury to my 12 h pony. My veterinarian says she damaged the suprascapular nerve when she collided with a tree. Should I confine her, as the shoulder keeps popping out? Is there hope of her walking properly again?
- I believe I have inadvertently fed my horses old vitamin C. I just bought it but discovered that the label had been replaced by the new owners of the store, and the old label underneath is at least two years old. Is there a chance old vitamin C could make my horses sick?
- I bought a 17-year-old Paint gelding three weeks ago. The previous owner said he was well-trained and was a husband/kid horse, but he has been misbehaving and rearing a lot. We are not very experienced.
- I bought my horse six years ago when he was 12 years old. He is never lame except for one abscess almost every year. Some farriers say he might have had founder in the past. He has a bit of seedy toe. I have had him on thyroid medication since spring and grazing muzzle into fall. Does he have to stay off grass completely (through the entire fall)? He has lost a lot of weight due to muzzle and diet, and he needs to put on some weight for winter. I get many conflicting opinions. Do you have any advice?
- I brought home two horses (both previously companions of each other) from a boarding and training facility. Since being moved to our property, the horse I have had the most experience working with (lunging, riding, ground manners) is bonding the least to both my husband and me. He accepts very little touching and prefers to shy away. If I try to catch him, he initiates an escape plan. The horse I have had the least amount of experience with is very personable and willing (follows you everywhere, allows himself to be groomed, lunged, etc.). Also, when I took the second horse out of the paddock for lunging, the first horse threw a fit and ran around, bucking and complaining. The second horse was never out of sight of the first horse. The person selling the horses thought keeping these two horses together would be a good idea, but I am having second thoughts. Any suggestions?
- I currently plow rein my four-year-old mare. I want to get her to neck rein. What is the best way to do that?
- I had a mare returned to me in what I would call very poor condition. How can I determine what body condition score to give this mare?
- I had an older horse that was losing weight fast for no reason. I was given a recipe that contained beet pulp, dried milk, we think sweetened rolled oats, alfalfa pellets, and a few other ingredients. We are again looking for that recipe. He loved it, and it put the weight on him at a steady pace. We soaked the beet pulp for half a day in water, then added the other ingredients to make the mash. Can you help me with the recipe?
- I have 15 acres of pasture that have locoweed throughout. I have 4 horses on that acreage. What kind of herbicide should I apply?
- I have 5 horses and no way to separate them currently, but I have one horse that is putting on weight. I am feeding hay, can I muzzle her for part of the day?
- I have a 10 year old Dutch Warmblood, imported from Holland just over two years ago. Each time he has an injection (either IV or IM) he is having skin reactions such as heat and swelling and they are getting progressively worse. He still has a knot over his jugular from a banamine injection from Oct. Who can I contact for more information on how to prevent/ treat this before he gets seriously worse? My veterinarian has already tried many of the normal treatments/ preventions.
- I have a 16-year-old Thoroughbred that was nerved last summer for his navicular condition. On Friday, he came up slightly lame, and by Sunday night, he is definitely lame. The owner checked the hoof and found a very slight swelling and heat around the coronet band. Can a nerved horse feel abscesses, founder, etc.?

- I have a 19-month-old filly that is Clydesdale x Appaloosa. She has held her weight very well all through winter. She mainly lives out but has been in for a couple of weeks when very cold. In the space of one week, she has dropped quite a large amount of weight. There are no obvious signs of illness. Is it simply lack of enough food that is likely to be the cause?
