- My 14-year-old roping horse competes twice a week and is in above-average condition. My question: Why does he seem to sweat so much more than all of the other horses competing? Should I be concerned?
- My 16 year old virgin mare becomes totally unmanagable in estrus. She vocalizes a lot during that time, otherwise she's very quiet. Any suggestions?
- My 16-year-old female Quarter Horse has a runny, snotty nose, a temperature of 100.5°F, and an irregular appetite. Her runny nose got worse over a three-day period, and we're up-to-date on all vaccines. The vet put her on Uniprem twice daily for five days. I mix the medicine with feed and corn oil to make it stick together. She is eating better but now has loose stools. Do I need to worry about the loose stools? If this is a virus, will it just run its course? If it is a bacterial infection, will the medication take care of it? Is the medication causing loose stools?
- My 16-year-old grey gelding has a golf-ball-sized knot under his tail. It doesn't seem to bother him, and he acts normal. Should I bother with trying to have that removed, and how serious is it?
- My 18-year-old Thoroughbred had been pretty athletic and was a show jumper. He was overworked, tore a tendon twice, and is now retired but ridden lightly. He is getting better, but it seems his stifles are now "popping" as his muscle tone in his rump is low. I had been riding him very lightly in straight lines at a walk and trot and walking him up and down small hills to condition him, but the snow has hit, so riding is out for a while. Any ideas?
- My 19-year-old daughter has a beautiful mare that is sound and 18 years old. My daughter no longer has time to ride as she is in college out of state. How do we find a loving home with a family who will give her good care? She'd be great for a intermediate rider.
- My 5-month-old foal has stopped eating. Could new teeth be coming in that will cause this? She doesn't show any signs of distress, but I am worried that she hasn't eaten in a couple of days. She will drink molasses water. Is this normal or should I contact the vet?
- My 7-year-old horse is kept in an open-type stable. After his breakfast, I let him out to the running field. He is there alone from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Now that winter has gone and the days are longer. I'm worried because he has an unusual habit of lying down in the middle of the afternoon. He lies there for about half an hour and then gets up. Sometimes he sleeps for a couple of minutes, sometimes not. Is this normal? Also, I started giving him Wisolan from Wisoform because he had a running nose for quite some time. It is as recommended. Do you know if it will help a running nose?
- My daughter has mentioned lately that her 11-year-old Trakhener mare has been a little resistant when having her girth tightened. Three days ago and then today the mare dropped to the ground and was difficult in getting up once her girth was put on. The girth is never tightened right from the start but rather is tightened in stages. We are wondering if these symptoms are significant.
- My daughter loves animals and shows a lot of interest in becoming a vet. What kind of schooling and training does it take?
- My farm is located on a state road that is curvy right at the front pasture of my small horse-boarding business. What can I put up to keep vehicles from running through the fence?
- My farrier insists that applying a hoof dressing is essential to developing a healthy hoof wall. I have read in some handbooks that hoof dressings, especially those containing turpentine, are at best not helpful and may be harmful. Should I routinely apply a hoof dressing to my horse's hooves or not?
- My grandpa recently died leaving his Appaloosa horse for me. I'm planning on riding him on a regular basis; however, my grandpa fed him grain every day. I can't afford that, so how should I change his diet?
- My horse cut the back of her hoof right behind the hard shell. I don't know what the name of it is. But she split open the back at the top of her hoof. Will it heal by itself if we keep it clean and keep blue coat on it?
- My horse gets overexcited when we start out on a trail ride and fights to be in the lead. What can I do?
- My horse has a lot of energy, but is really thin. Soon I will start riding 5 days a week for an hour a day. What would be a good diet to get him to gain weight but not have any excess energy?
- My horse has a lump under its jaw with no other symptoms of strangles. What else could it be?
- My horse has bots on his legs. Can bots be transmitted from one horse to another?
- My horse has crusty brownish red stuff forming in his ears. When wiped with a damp cloth it softens and is bloody. The problem seems to be getting worse as the summer progresses. What should I do?
- My horse has had a very painful left front hoof. He puts little weight on it. The hoof is draining now at the coronary band. He is walking better. What do I need to do now that the hoof is draining?
- My horse has stopped sweating. She hides in the shade in the pasture, this becomes worse after even a little ridden exercise. I have tried wheat germ oil and cheap beer. What do you suggest?
- My horse has terrible hooves with thin/brittle walls. She also suffers from constant abscesses and/or thrush. I have done so much to try to keep her healthy (including hoof supplements, regular cleaning, trimming, and keeping her stall clean). Right now she gets about 1.5 lb of 10% sweet feed daily and one to two flakes per day as well as pasture time. She is an easy keeper but is not overweight. She is also a well-muscled quarter horse with small feet that I believe lead to a lot of the problem. I was wondering if taking her off sweet feed completely may help, and, if so, should I give her something else? I was wondering about beet pulp. Also, different people have told me to try Safe Choice or Strategy. What do you think about them?
- My horse has white calcifations in both his ears, which make them very tender. Our vet says that there is nothing we can do. Is this true?
- My horse is 15 hands and weighs 455 kg. What should she weigh, and what body condition score should she be at the moment?
- My horse is being boarded in a pasture with a couple of aggressive mares that won't let him eat hay with the rest of them. They continue to chase him away. Is it a bad situation for him? He is a four-year-old gelding. I just purchased him a month ago, and he is not trained. He has not been totally desensitized, and I wonder if his being with these mares will undo any desensitizing that I have done with him.
- My horse is cribbing, mostly after feeding and when eating hay. I read recently that this can be a digestive problem. He is currently being fed a high-fat/high-fiber 8% pellet alfalfa and timothy hay. Should I change his diet?
- My horse is losing hair around around all four hooves. What can cause this, and what is the treatment?
- My horse is really old, and I am trying to put off putting him down, but his teeth are so bad I think it is too painful for him to eat. He is still at a good weight, but he winters really hard, and I can't see this being an easy one for him. Is there any type of feed that would be easier on his teeth?
- My horse knows how to walk and trot. She is four years old and is a Palomino/Dun mix. We have been showing together for two years. She can lope but not on the correct lead. How do I teach her to go on the correct lead?

- My horse seems to be losing weight in the topline area. Why is this?
- My horse stands in the snow for hours. It seems she is losing weight although she eats and drinks water.
- My horse suddenly stopped sweating. We had a hard work on Saturday and Sunday—no sweat. It has been very hot and humid. My veterinarian recommended One AC, electrolytes, and stall rest with fans. Where I live it has been unusually hot and humid, with a heat index of 110. He is only 3 and just started in rigorous training. Is this pattern of overheating on Saturday (he was very sweaty when we were riding), then not sweating on Sunday typical, and will he start sweating again?

- My horse will not eat and has some white foam in his mouth. What could be wrong?
- My horse's fecal egg count came back "0-1, rare, egg count for small strongyles". I deworm only if needed. He was dewormed in the summer with Ivermectin Gold. What should I use this time?
- My horse's hoof is slowly getting a very large red band. She has been lame on and off for about three months now, and most recently, the diagnosis was arthritis. We don't remember seeing this redness growing on her hoof before and wonder if it could be the cause? Is it normal for a hoof to have this? She only has one white hoof, the rest are black. Am I just seeing this because of the color difference in hooves?
- My husband wants to plant oats as a "mother crop" for grass. Do horses founder or colic on green, growing oat plants?
- My last question asked about the best grass choices for my pasture. The answer included white and red clover. Aren't clovers toxic to horses? Also, reed canarygrass was recommended, and I thought reed canarygrass was invasive and not very nutritious.
- My maiden mare has just started her ninth month of pregnancy. I've noticed one udder has some swelling and it's hard to the touch. Is this normal? Everything else seems fine and there is no discharge of any kind.
- My mare had a bad reaction to hock injections (upper joint hyaluronic acid, lower joint hyaluronic acid, and cortisone) twice. Both times the hocks swelled and were hot and painful. Should I consider injecting again?
- My mare is in labor. She is passing a large bag that looks as if it is filled with blood. She has been like this for about an hour. What should I do?
- My mare is showing signs of being in season, but when checked, she is not doing anything. Her ovaries are the size of small grapes. Is there anything I can give her to start her cycling?
- My mare seems to be leaking milk, however, she is not in foal and has not been recently. Why is this and what can I do?
- My mare suffers from encysted small strongyle infections. Last winter, her belly was bloated, and her weight generally shifted downward, making her look 10 years older than her young 10 years. The vet did blood work and she showed some kidney stress, so we lowered her protein. Then the vet felt that her problem was encysted small strongyles. We treated her by double dosing Panacur® for five days. She showed amazing changes in a short period of time. It's winter again, and she is showing the weight changes. I rotate dewormers (four times a year) and decided to get a fecal exam before worming, since she was looking different. Sure enough, she tested positive for strongyle eggs. I am assuming it is small strongyles again and wonder if a better way to worm her is available. My husband's gelding is cared for in the same way (except for feed — she gets MoorMan's® ultra fiber-low starch) and does not show any body changes, and his fecal test was negative.
- My mare urinates or squirts every time my daughter rides her in practice and competition on poles and barrels. She has even slowed down so she can urinate when running, and it slows her performance down. We have tried marbles and have now tried an implant. No change other than the mare's attitude and cycles have improved for her. We do not know how to control the urinating issue, as she has just gotten worse in the last two years.

- My neighbors have two horses on about 10 acres. During the winter, they keep the horses confined to a pen that is approximately 25 feet by 25 feet for each horse. That includes a proper three-sided shelter for each horse so they can get out of the elements. The horses are properly fed. My question is this seems awfully cruel to keep these horses in their pen from November to April/May. They seem bored stiff. Is this normal practice in winter?
