- We are building fenced paddocks of about 60 feet by 110 feet, with five on each side of a center alley. What is the minimum width for the alley? Do I need to make it large enough for a truck? (There is no need to deliver hay, but I wonder about vet vehicles if an animal founders.) Incidentally, this will serve horses and miniature Jersey cows.
- We are going camping with our two horses. Which is the best and safest method of containing our horses when there are no corrals in the campsite? Should we use portable metal corrals or electric corrals?
- We are in a second year drought area. I am looking to buy rolls of hay to feed horses over the winter. I have found someone who has foxtail millet rolls at a good price. The rolls look good, and the seller says he has sold a lot to horse owners and they love it. I have never run into this type of hay before and usually try to get timothy/orchardgrass mix. Any information on foxtail millet hay fed to horses would be appreciated.
- We are looking at buying a miniature horse. His back hoof is bent behind him. He walks on his ankle/leg. I was told he was born like this and he is sound. We are looking for him to pull a cart. The owner says he is broke to drive, ties, clips, and loads.
- We are looking at purchasing a three-year-old filly. We noticed she has an umbilical hernia. Do we need to be concerned about this?
- We are planning to put in some run-in shelters. What direction should they face?
- We are setting up horse pasture on land that had previously been used for cows. We probably have 30 to 50 cherry trees along what will be the fence line, a similar number of black walnut, and 5 to 10 black locust. This is over approximately 10 acres. We know that each of these trees poses a different set of risks. Could you advise us on aggressiveness of removal?
- We are wanting to enclose a new pasture. Could you outline some general steps to giving it the best start?
- We baled very late this year and unfortunately the hay got rained on and looks relatively brownish. It does NOT smell mildewy or musty. Can I feed it to my horses, and do you suppose it has any feed value anymore?
- We had 200 bales of first-cut grass hay delivered in September. In the last few weeks, several of our horses have developed sores on gums and tongue. What is causing this and, if it is the hay, why did it take so long to develop?
- We have 2 horses and 1 pony on a 2 acre dry lot. We are having a terrible time with the mud this winter. Any suggestions to help with mud management? Are there products we can use to help dry things up and make for better footing?
- We have a 16-month-old warmblood colt that broke away a part of the outside of his hoof approximately 5 weeks ago. He now appears to be toeing in. What would be the correct procedure for assisting in rebalancing him? Do we take more off the inside wall?
- We have a 5-month-old orphan foal that has begun to lay her ears back and try to kick us at feeding time.
- We have a herd of Peruvian Pasos (11) which tend to get fat, and some seem laminitic prone if we don't really watch their diet. In general, we prefer that they roam with a few quarter horses on 30 acres, but we take them off the grass in the spring with new grass and elevated NSC (non-structural carbohydrates). We understand there is a period in fall when this is also a problem. We would like to know the dates, or is it more a weather/temperature period we need to watch for to avoid problems with high sugars?
- We have a horse that just had a foal. All of a sudden, we noticed that she will not gain any weight and her left hind end is collapsed. The vet said it is nerve damage and we cannot do anything for her. When she poops, her anus does not close. We cannot afford to take her to another vet, but she is just a great horse; we do not want to put her down. Should we try giving her any supplements?
- We have a number of new pastures and would like to create better grass. What are the steps?
- We have a number of new pastures and would like to create better grass. What are the steps?
- We have a three-year-old horse that is halter broke, and we now want to start training him to be ridden. Are there tips or guidelines for ground work and other preparation for riding?
- We have an eight-year-old gelding that has never had any health problems. He is on a deworming program every six weeks. Within the last four weeks, he has started scratching his mane and tail continuously. I have contacted our veterinarian for a consult, but until our appointment, is there another dewormer I can use to relieve his itching?
- We have had difficulty with the hoof wall delaminating especially around the shoe nail holes in our horse. The hoof wall cracks and breaks away. He has been on hoof supplements and has had good farrier care. He has never been lame or foot sore with this issue. We removed his shoes in late November, and the wall has grown nicely with just small chips along the bottom of the foot. He has remained sound and in work (inside arena) for the past few months. I want to begin jumping again and am hesitant about putting glue-on shoes on an eventing horse. What is causing his hoof condition, and what can I do to alleviate it? What are my shoeing options?
- We have moved to a farm where the last cotton crop was harvested in fall 2008. We want to start grazing our horses on the grasses that are coming up, but need to know if 2,4-D can be used to control the weeds that are also coming up. If so, what kinds of wait periods, etc., need to be followed?
- We have quite a bit of Star-of-Bethlehem in our pastures and I understand it is very hard to get rid of. Plus, I don't know if the Fescue that is in our pastures has endophytes? We have broodmares and are concerned for their health. Please help.
- We planted a pasture mix for horses along with oats. However, we now want to get rid of the oats. How do we do so?
- We recently rescued a horse from a farm and are trying to find out more about him. We were told that he was a Standardbred horse, and we think he is about 17 years old. When checking his teeth, we noticed that he has a tattoo on his inner upper lip. Would it be normal for a Standardbred horse to be tattooed in this way? Is there any way we can find more information about the animal from this tattoo?
- We store hay (for horses) in a multiuse 60 x 40 building. I would like to control insects (crickets, spiders) but do not want to harm the horses. What do you recommend?
- We would like to pasture two quarter horses and a pony on half acre of land. There would be a separate riding arena and we would feed hay and grain instead of depending on grass. Is this sufficient area?
